Carmen
Georges Bizet
Carmen, the ultimate femme fatale, is at the centre of Bizet's fiery and passionate opera, a heady mix of sex and death in which every tune is a hit. Mezzo-soprano Heather Shipp sings the title role of an opera that outraged it's first night audience in Paris back in 1875, yet which has gone on to become one of the world's most popular operas.
Conductor: Andreas Delfs, Andrea Licata
Director: Daniel Kramer
Sung in French with English titles

With a glittering cast and creative team, this timeless classic will be a treat.

The Portrait
Mieczyslaw Weinberg
Chartkov, a poor but talented artist, acquires a painting in a Petersburg art shop that exerts a diabolical inflence over his life, granting him wealth and success, but at the cost of his artistic soul. From a fantastical story by Gogol, the Polish composer Weinberg, who was both influenced and championed by Shostakovich, fashions a powerful opera that emerges as a tale for our times.
Conductor: Rossen Gergov
Director: David Pountney
Sung in English
A co-production with Opéra national de Lorraine, Nancy.
